Teaching philosophy

A teaching style built from sitting the exams myself

My experience studying at a top grammar school and achieving a grade 9 and two A*s in the GCSE Maths, A Level Maths and Further Maths exams has made clear to me how maths is effectively taught and what personal study is required from a successful student.

During my time at 6th Form, I qualified for the British Maths Olympiad and achieved the highest score in my year. I also witnessed classmates who fell behind due to a variety of reasons: a major pitfall was their treatment of maths as a memory-based subject, rather than a skill that relies just as much on developing the correct patterns of reasoning as it does on the content in the textbook.

This background, coupled with over 300 hours of tutoring more than 20 students since 2022, has shaped my methodology. My lessons are generally structured as follows:

Intuitive teaching

I explain the content intuitively in the live lesson, and the students are free to ask questions at any time. I give numerous exam-style questions for the students to complete throughout the class which they solve and share their answers to, allowing me to ensure their understanding.

Targeted homework

I set carefully selected homework after each lesson, which forces students to actively recall and apply what we covered by solving questions independently. Students mark their own answers and note their mistakes, which we go through at the start of the next lesson.

I always cater my teaching to the individual students. Through engaging in the lessons and completing the homework, students will be equipped with the knowledge and logical thinking needed to tackle exam problems and excel in their maths exams.
